Why does the system operate well in winter time?
What concerns the potential users of constructed wetlands in Poland is system efficiency in low temperatures. It must be stressed that the systems operate very well also during severe winters. This results from the fact, that the system efficiency does not depend totally on vegetation. Despite sub-zero temperatures outside, adequate temperature for microorganisms remains in the gravel bed. These conditions are ensured by:
- insulation, made by dead leaves, snow layer, and dry gravel above the sewage level,
- continuous inflow of warm wastewater,
- energy production in biochemical processes by microorganisms.
The decrease in the system efficiency in winter time (20% according to scientific data) is compensated for by bigger surface of the cell. Local, climatic condition are also taken into consideration in design so that adequate treatment can be achieved in winter conditions.
